EAGLE LAKE - Eagle River, Wisconsin - northern wisconsin vacation - northwoods vacation destination - recreation, lodging, events, and more

Eagle River CHAIN OF LAKES
The Otter Rapids Hydroelectric Plant is on the Wisconsin River near the confluence of the Wisconsin and Eagle Rivers, west of Eagle River. Its watershed is in both Vilas and Oneida counties and is known as the Eagle River Chain of Lakes. The "Chain" is the world's largest chain of inland freshwater lakes - 28 in all, which occupy 3,928 acres of surface water and 68 miles of shoreline. Water elevated twelve feet by the Otter Rapids Dam has served to deepen and connect the lakes of the Eagle River Chain.
Because the "Chain" is freely navigable, it is heavily used by the public for fishing, swimming, boating, water-skiing, sailing, and in winter, ice fishing. The "Chain" supports a host of resorts, motels, campgrounds, and marinas. There are 9 public boat landings and 6 public parks along the "Chain", some of which provide handicapped access. A canoe take-out and portage is well marked on the north side of Otter Rapids Dam so canoeists can continue down the Wisconsin River.
The "Chain" contains a great range of sportfish. Principle species include muskie, walleye, norther pike, largemouth, and smallmouth bass, as well as a variety of pan fish. "Chain" lakes are especially well known for their musky and walleye, and are stocked by the DNR regularly.
